was born on 14 Mar 1843 in Grayson County, VA. He died on 5 Jan 1923
in Nealy Ridge, Dickenson County, VA. He was buried in Nealy Ridge,
Dickenson County, VA. Information for this family extracted from
"Abridged History of the Reedy's of Virginia", by Edward N. Reedy,
and from C.M. Reedy, Ironton, OH, 1992. Also from autobiography of son, James
Peter Reedy, 1931.
According to E.N. Reedy, Linville served in the 7th Virginia Volunteers, Co.
B; CSA. He was captured and held prisoner near Columbus, Ohio, until the end
of the war. According to son, James P. Reedy, he was in Colonel Menefee's
company and then in Colonel Clarence J. Prentice's company. Later served in
Captain Bill Rose's company.(J.P. Reedy, 1931) The truth is Linville
served in Col. Menefees company, which was an outlaw band of marauders out of
Pike County, KY, that was not connected at all to the Confederate Army until
they were threatened with arrest by the same army. They became the 7th Confederate
Cavalry Battery under Col. Prentice, because Col Menefee was discharged and nearly
hanged. They continued in their marauding on the area under Col Prentice
hanging Union sympathizers and blacks, and sealing horses and such. Col. Prentice
was removed and they were led by Capt. Bill Rose but little changed in there
"milatary" activities.(National Archives, Service Records, Washington,
DC) In later life Linvillle served as Justice of the Peace for Buchanan
and Dickenson Counties. Linville and his wife were first cousins through their
mothers. His mother was Nancy Adams and her mother was sister Mirah Adams of
Lee County, VA. Linville REEDY and Mary Jane MILLIS were married on 27 Aug
