First Generation

1. Hanzet RIEDI died on 15 Mar 1700 in Filisur, Graubunden, The Grisons (presently part of Switzerland). He was buried in Filisur Parrish Church. He was born in Schmitten, Graubunden, The Grisons (presently part of Switzerland).

According to the research done by the Genealogical Institute Of Zurich of parrish church records written by Rev. Jan C. Linard starting in 1690, contracted for Mr. Frank W. Reedy of Frankinton, LA; Hans Riedi (also known in Rev. Linard's records as "Hanzet Riedi the old, who came from Schmitten"). Information about this family are found in family household # XXXI. These records are located in Filisur, Caton Graubunden, Switzerland.

Filisur and Schmitten are small villages deep in the heart of the Rhaetan Alps, located in the Caton of Graubunden. At the time our ancestors were there, Graubunden was an independent country called The Grisons. It was a republic made up of three Leagues; The League of the House Of God, The League of the Ten Jurisdictions, and The Grey League. It did not join the Swiss Confederation until 1803, and then it was forced by treaty. Prior to 1803, it had been more closley aligned to Austria than to the Swiss Confederation.

Parrish records for Filisur do not begin until 1690 and even then they are not complete. Pages 5 and 6 are missing which contain the marriage date for Jachiam Riedi and Anna Janet (family record # III). The name Riedi has citizenship in the towns of Papspels and Schmitten, and Filisur is just ten miles from Schmitten. The name has been there for a long time and we have been told that it comes from Rhaetian-romatic origins (Romanch), a language spoken in mainly in Graubunden that goes back to when Rheatia was a part of the Roman Empire.
She is listed in the 1690 Filisur Records as "the sister to Jachiem Maria" Hanzet RIEDI and Margreth (Greta) MARIA had the following children:
