Fifth Generation

17. George Peter REEDY3 was born about 1749 in Goshenhoppen, Montgomery County, PA. We have no record of George Peter's birth. Its approximation is based on the fact that his parents were married in 1746 and older brother Conrad was born in 1747. Their mother died in 1755 and there were two more younger brothers. George would have had to been born in 1749/50. He died about 1837 in Grayson County, VA.3 He died sometime beforre 1840. Land transactions to his son Peter indicate about 1837. In Hollenbach's short history of the Riedy's of Northampton County, PA, he has mixed up this George Peter with his nephew George Peter, son of his brother Jacob, who moved from Heidelberg, Northampton County, to Hemlock, Columbia County, about 1812 and died about 1826. The genealogy which Hollenbach gave was from the descendants of George Peter Riedy of Columbia County, PA, and not George Peter Reedy who moved to Grayson County, VA.

This George Peter Riedy was born about 1749 in Goshenhoppen Township, Montgomery County, where his brother Conrad was born. He died at the approximate age of 87 about 1837 in Grayson County, Virginia. He is the father of all the Virginia and North Carolina Reedy's.

George Peter has Revolutionary War service record from 1778 - 1782 as follows:
1. General Muster 1778 - He was Corporal of the 7th Company, 3rd Batttalion, Northampton County Malitia.

2. General Muster 1780 he and was Sergeant of the 7th Company, 6th Batttalion, Northampton County Malitia.

3. Muster Roll, July 11, 1781, by Colonel Stephen Balliet, George Peter is a sergeant. His younger brother Abraham is the drummer, and his older brother Conrad is a private. However, George Peter hied a substitute to serve for him: "Peter Reidy, Serg. Northampton 6th Bat. Capt. George Smither's Co. Seventh Class, Sgt. Nathan Beach served in his place. May 12 - August 7. Dated July 17, 1781.

4. General Muster 1782 - Listed as Sergeant of the 7th Company, 6th Battalion (PA Archives, 5th series, vol.8 page 469, 525)

George Peter Reedy was listed in two bicentennial publications of Synder County, PA: He was number 323 in the list of soldiers resident in Synder County during the Revolution, but buried elsewhere. He was living in Penn Township, Northumberland County, in 1787, and listed as a Sergeant in the 6th Battalion Northampton County Militia.

It is not clear by his land transactions or by tax records exactly when Goerge Peter moved from Heidelberg, Northampton County, to Penn Township, Northumberland County. His military records place him in Northampton County, but like many others, may have used these years during the Revolution to speculate in lands made accesible by the war. The 1787 reference show that he was living at least part of the year in Northumberland County, the specific location being Penn Township in what is now Synder County, along the Susquehanna River.

He filed a land warrant in Montgomery County, VA, on Jan 25, 1782, for 122 acres on the north fork of Little River. But it doesen't look as though he completed it. Then in 1806 he purchased two parcels of land from Rob and Ann Parsons of Grayson County; 200 acres total. (Deed Book 2, p. 416 & Deed Book 4, p. 155) This is where he lived the rest of his life.

Mary died after 1840 in Grayson County, VA.4 Would love to know Mary's madian name, but unfortunitly, marriage record has not be found at this time. Mary is found in the 1840 Federal Census for Grayson County as the head of the house at 80 -90 years of age indicating the death of her husband before 1840. George Peter REEDY and Mary had the following children:
